{"id":717,"date":"2013-07-16T09:19:49","date_gmt":"2013-07-16T09:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unk.com\/blog\/?p=717"},"modified":"2024-04-18T01:53:45","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T07:53:45","slug":"how-to-help-your-clients-achieve-their-therapy-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unk.com\/blog\/how-to-help-your-clients-achieve-their-therapy-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Help Your Clients Achieve Their Therapy Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever set a therapeutic goal for a client, had them agree to it, and then&#8230; find they&#8217;ve done nothing at all about it at their next session?<\/p>\n<p>To escape from a problem (whether a burning building or a state of mind) a strategy is needed. Clear goal setting is vital when helping people in therapy. The mind needs a clear orientation (especially when it&#8217;s all emotional) and a compelling &#8216;blueprint&#8217; fixed within consciousness of how things can be better in the future. But if the client doesn&#8217;t try to reach those goals, or if they don&#8217;t know where to begin, it all gets a little trickier.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here&#8217;s my quick and easy guide on how to set therapy goals your client feels motivated to achieve. <\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>1. State the goal in positive terms<\/h3>\n<p>I never take goals for granted. Even when treating, say, a spider phobia, where you&#8217;d assume the goal was pretty self-evident, we&#8217;ll still spend time clarifying their goal in <em>positive <\/em>terms:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;What do you want from this session?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to feel terrified and sick when I see spiders!&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What kind of a blueprint is that? Imagine getting in a cab and telling the driver all the places you <em>don&#8217;t <\/em>want to go.<\/p>\n<h3>Prefer to watch instead?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yRImwn85vD4?si=M3W9usnKDWh4xHC4&amp;rel=0\" title=\"Watch How to Help Your Clients Achieve Their Therapy Goals\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>People who lead fearful lives tend to waste time focusing on what they <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> want to have happen in the future; successful, fulfilled people focus on positive possibilities and work toward them.<\/p>\n<p>So instead you could say; <em>&#8220;Okay, so what do you imagine it will be like to <strong>feel relaxed around spiders<\/strong>?&#8221;<\/em> Ah, now we&#8217;re getting somewhere, we&#8217;re beginning to gently steer our client away not just from what they <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> want, but <em>towards<\/em> their therapeutic destination.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CB-CaWarflg?modestbranding=1&amp;autohide=1&amp;rel=0&amp;iv_load_polilcy=3\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"txt-small\">For more technique demonstration videos, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unk.com\/blog\/members\">Uncommon Practitioners TV<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>2. Therapy sculpture<\/h3>\n<p>Help your clients <em>shape<\/em> their goals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unk.com\/blog\/3-simple-ways-to-reframe-your-clients-negative-bias\/\">Someone who has been negatively focused<\/a> for a long time may find it quite difficult to suddenly start thinking about what they <em>do <\/em>want. For example, if someone&#8217;s been depressed they may be so mired in misery that any &#8216;solution talk&#8217; feels utterly alien. Here you might gently suggest desired outcomes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t it be good to start to feel a little more energetic in the mornings?&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If they concur, then you can start to mould this idea into a more specific goal, but&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<h3>3. Don&#8217;t leap the staircase<\/h3>\n<p>I might ask someone to imagine a staircase with ten steps and suggest they wouldn&#8217;t expect to leap up all ten steps at once, but we can get going by starting to climb <em>one step at a time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Break the goal down into manageable chunks. If someone tells you they want to &#8216;be happy&#8217; we need to &#8216;unwrap&#8217; this word and discover what this might equate to in practice; for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>feel more energetic<\/li>\n<li>enjoy sex again<\/li>\n<li>socialize more<\/li>\n<li>start to play the piano again<\/li>\n<li>re-join the gym and do regular exercise<\/li>\n<li>sleep well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And so on. So now we&#8217;ve broken down the vague and indistinct goal of &#8216;being happier&#8217; (perhaps itself sculpted from &#8216;not wanting to feel depressed&#8217;) into specific concrete components that we can actually start to work toward.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Sell the sizzle<\/h3>\n<p>The power of <em>expectation<\/em> is immense: use it. Your words, your demeanor, your facial expressions all create expectation.<\/p>\n<p>And you can do this by artfully <em>implying <\/em>positive outcomes, rather than bluntly stating them.<\/p>\n<p>Tell people what to expect, how things will improve. Build future pictures using all their senses of how things will be better and happier:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;As depression starts to lift it&#8217;s common for dreaming to decrease and therefore day time energy to start increasing&#8230; so that it&#8217;s possible to do more again&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;When these fearful feelings calm down and recede, people often find themselves experiencing a marvellous sense of lightness and freedom&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>5. Can&#8217;t wait to know!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unk.com\/blog\/how-to-motivate-change-with-curiosity-gap\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"24\">Curiosity is a huge motivator<\/a>: Can therapists use curiosity to enhance their therapy&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>Find out next week!<\/p>\n<p>But seriously &#8211; of course we can. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommon-knowledge.co.uk\/milton_erickson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr Milton Erickson<\/a> would use curiosity as a motivator all the time; he&#8217;d get people fixated on the possible course of their own potential.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;And I really don&#8217;t know&#8230; and you can be very curious&#8230; just how these new good changes&#8230; are going to begin to show up in your life&#8230; in rather surprising and delightful ways&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So, to sum up <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your goal setting needs to be:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>positively orientated<\/li>\n<li>specific (and if necessary broken down into manageable steps)<\/li>\n<li>compelling (remember the sizzle!)<\/li>\n<li>made more compelling through maximising curiosity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because, in the words of Ella Wheeler Wilcox:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;One ship sails East,<br \/>\nAnd another West,<br \/>\nBy the self-same winds that blow,<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis the set of the sails And not the gales,<br \/>\nThat tells the way we go&#8221;.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For extra help with goal-setting with clients, have a look at the
