“I don’t know how many times I’ve watched something on UPTV and used it the very next day with one of my clients!”

UPTV is absolutely invaluable to me. I watch regularly because there is always something more for me to learn, but it especially is helpful when I’m looking for more specific ideas or different ways of approaching an issue with specific clients. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched something on UPTV and used it the very next day with one of my clients!
I am so grateful that this is available to me, as I am unable to get together with other therapists on a regular basis to review client cases. And even if I were able to, I would still utilize UPTV because of the easy to access ‘live examples’ that are available.
- Kristin Rodreick Wilson, Clinical Social Worker, Minnesota, USA.
What sort of approaches do the client videos show?
The Uncommon Knowledge approach to psychotherapy is fundamentally solution focused, brief therapy with CBT and hypnotherapy used liberally as tools. You will find examples of the following techniques in the live therapy videos: goal setting, hypnotic language, hypnotic phenomena, inductions, information gathering, miscellaneous techniques, reframing, resource location and amplification, solution focused questions, stories and metaphors, utilisation and more.
The approaches you will see incorporate techniques from Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Human Givens Therapy, Person-Centred Counselling, Coaching and many other schools of therapy.
"Since I joined Uncommon U, my negative approach has changed. I now feel positive in helping clients."

UPTV and Uncommon U have helped me tremendously, being a new Practitioner/Therapist and Coach. After I graduated from university with psychology degrees, I built a website relating to the services I offered (helping emotionally challenged individuals to become resilient). However, I was nervous and not confident enough to see clients.
My website attracts many clients on a daily basis. However, unfortunately, I had to pass most of my clients on to other practitioners because I lacked knowledge in certain areas – mainly anxiety and depression, smoking cessation, relationship breakdown, and many other clinical disorders. But since I joined Uncommon U, my negative approach has changed. I now feel positive in helping clients.
Thank you to all staff at Uncommon Knowledge for your help and support!

"UPTV has provided a fantastic forum and I particularly value (and indeed absolutely enjoy) the Uncommon Psychotherapy course."

I am at a transition point in my career. I have lectured on leadership and more relevantly on coaching for 14 years at University College London (Institute of Education). I have moved towards working with clients and needed a review and extension process to reformat my thinking.
UPTV has provided a fantastic forum and I particularly value (and indeed absolutely enjoy) the Uncommon Psychotherapy course.
- Dr. Max Coates, Therapeutic Coach and University lecturer, Wimborne, Dorset, UK.

"An opportunity to observe an experienced therapist putting into action what I have learnt in theory"

UPTV is a fantastic, vast resource that I can just pick up and put down when I have time. Being a trainee counsellor, it’s an opportunity to observe an experienced therapist putting into action what I have learnt in theory. What is really useful is the text provided, explaining Mark’s thought processes and how he envisages techniques helping with the client he is dealing with. Excellent value for money. Thank you for sharing.
- Lesley, Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, HG Dip P (Trainee), Exeter, England, UK.

"As a means of professional development it's unrivalled"

An invaluable resource for practitioners. Carefully crafted to give a wealth of information and suggestions and to provoke thought. As a means of professional development it’s unrivalled in my view. UPTV has given me knowledge and confidence and as such has benefited not just me, but more importantly my clients. Thank you so much.

We’ve created a Techniques Index in UPTV that shows you where you can find examples of the following techniques in the Client Conversation videos: goal setting, hypnotic language, hypnotic phenomena, inductions, information gathering, miscellaneous techniques, reframing, resource location and amplification, solution focused questions, stories and metaphors, utilisation.
What type of practitioner is UPTV valuable for?
UPTV is for everyone who is in the position of helping other people not just overcome emotional difficulties, but also in working towards helping people realise goals and aspirations.

You may not have had the chance to observe actual therapy being done with real clients since your training and, if you’re not training right now, that might have been a while ago. "It helps me feel safe as a therapist and empowered to practice more effectively"

UPTV provides a wonderfully accessible form of CPD for me. I trust the teaching that it provides and so am able to relax into consciously learning and unconsciously absorbing the ideas being presented.
Having completed my counselling training about a year ago and then returned to living overseas, I sometimes feel isolated as a practitioner. I have recognised that as a newly qualified practitioner it is important that I form good counselling habits. UPTV demonstrates best practice techniques which I am able to incorporate into my therapy naturally as I am watching them naturally rather than learning about them theoretically. UPTV is broadening my perspective, honing my creativity and reminding me how my theoretical learning can be practically applied. It helps me feel safe as a therapist and empowered to practice more effectively. I have already spotted areas in my own style that needed tweaking and have amended it accordingly. Watching the sessions deepens my learning both consciously and subconsciously and provides me with practical strategies, tools, reframes, metaphors and confidence to take into client sessions.
I try to watch a session each day and alternate between client sessions and the shorter technique demonstrations.

I am a student of hypnotherapy currently studying for a diploma so I can become a professional therapist. Since UPTV isn’t this, I am studying with another college alongside using UPTV and the course presented. I enjoy UPTV much more as it is specific to a topic and in the future, possibly to individual clients. It gives me confidence I will be able to deliver the right help to my clients and to expand my practice quickly. Actual conversations are the best help – rather than reading about therapy, you can actually witness it. The subjects covered are wide ranging and easy to find.

The UPTV has been amazing for my growth as a practitioner. I love watching the live demonstrations with the clients and seeing how I could use the techniques I learned in creative ways. I have qualified as a hypnotherapist three years ago and I only recently started to practice it with clients, so this UPTV has been a gift from God in my learning journey. The conversations with the clients help me massively to expand my knowledge and to feel confident in taking on clients with similar issues I saw demonstrated in the video. Previously, I wouldn’t have had the confidence that I can help clients. The courses here are very well put together with clear examples and videos where we can creatively use each technique. They are an amazing resource to learn about therapy and improve my techniques and it is something I wish all counselling school would recommend. I have been watching or listening to a client video twice a week and each time I am learning new things to support my client. I’ve had positive and rapid results with my clients due to this channel. I would recommend this to all the therapists.

I have gained so much from the professional knowledge within the course and UPTV in general. It did scare me that I was being trained as a Hypnotherapist but had no background in Psychotherapy at all. I feel I am better equipped now and I still have the information to hand to re-visit whenever I need it. I definitely have a better understanding of why and how issues arise and the information was presented in a way that was easy to understand and related to real life examples. I have gained more confidence as a practitioner as a result and am now building up my practice. Highly recommended. Thank you.

I find watching Mark doing sessions is both educational and inspiring. The main things I really love are the stories, metaphors, and reframes he uses. I just have not found anyone else who is such a master at these skills and so generous with sharing them!
I feel like I’m learning a new reframe or story or metaphor all the time and it’s actually got my brain thinking so much in that way that I’m finding it easier and easier to come up with my own. Yesterday, in fact, a client I have helped with guilt, sleep, quitting smoking, and is now in for reducing her drinking, said to me, “I love your stories.” I thought afterwards myself, “Wow that’s nice! I’m guess I’m learning well from the best then.”
I also find the explanations of what Mark is doing really helpful and often pause the video to take it in. It allows me to pick up things that I otherwise miss, it gives me understanding and because it’s written on the screen, I feel like I also retain it better.
On an inspirational level, I find watching or even listening to Mark keeps me motivated and increases my confidence significantly. This may sound hilarious, but I actually tell myself that I’m just going to channel Mark Tyrell in my own Carolina way. I do chuck in Milton Erickson and a few others in there too! Great work, please keep it up.

I like the fact that material is covered in three ways: client session reconstructions, skills development using actors, and post-session analysis. The videos are well produced and clear. An enormous amount of material is on offer. The work is low-key and specific, without hype.
I’m using it for CPD purposes at the moment, because I have a background in counselling/CBT and am interested in learning more about solution-focused coaching. Watching techniques used in the client sessions and actor demonstrations is very useful to highlight the differences between counselling methods and coaching methods.

Finding the UPTV an extremely valuable resource, which confirms or elaborates the finer skills required working with clients, so thank you for sharing.
Just to confirm, I work with bereaved clients who once you have completed a couple of sessions, it becomes clear that it’s not always the bereavement that’s the reason they need help.
Hoarding, finance, a feeling of loneliness, or family rift are the reasons a person needs help. Once you can offer support to them in these areas the client starts to live again and the bereavement starts to come to the surface. A feeling of moving forward and seeing life again becomes possible. Adapting, changing to the client’s needs is necessary if a person is to be helped. Using various skills and techniques is a requirement for any counsellor and therefore utilizing the various training you supply becomes a place which is a one-stop shop (so to speak) for many people working with clients with various needs.
I have, over the years, used many of your training programs in a sort of mix and match to help my clients. So, one way does not fit all. Adaption is the key, which you supply with great ease of learning.
So, thank you for your ongoing support which has helped hundreds of my clients and potentially thousands who may never have received the help they so greatly needed and have received.

I regard UPTV as a tutor, a supervisor, colleague and a friend. There is plenty of helpful information available in the demonstrations with clients in the form of methods, techniques and explanations and it provides some original ways of tackling problems. Mark has a creative way of incorporating things that are important and relevant to a client, often in the form of metaphors and the informal commentaries that follow demonstrations sum up a client’s problems in a succinct way. UPTV manages to be informal and yet very professional at the same time. It is a great way to be guided and to acquire some really useful knowledge and techniques. I would also recommend UPTV to feel part of a professional community.

I am a trainee counsellor and UPTV is giving me the confidence to put my theoretical training into practice. It is a bit daunting learning all the theory and only having limited opportunities to do practical work, so it is extremely helpful to be able to access this resource. Just wanted to know if there is a download to help with ‘addiction to UPTV’?
I started to watch it and have become totally absorbed in the material that is on there.
I have found it entertaining absorbing and fascinating. I have already learned some techniques from it, which I have used in my own practice with great success.
I find I watch a client session or technique on UPTV and within one or two of my own client sessions I have incorporated something I have learned. It is better than classroom learning because I can watch many times to learn more and more. I love it!
As usual all the material from you is of top quality.
I am really looking forward to seeing a lot more in the future.
Keep up the good work.

The almost entire session is in the video to get a sense of how to build rapport, how to subtly introduce ideas, how quick the hypnosis can be at times, and how to end the session. There are helpful notes on the screen occasionally that reference the technique Mark is using. And a commentary video and analysis notes after each session. It shows that Uncommon U has put a lot of time and thought into each video to teach the techniques in a valuable way.

I feel so much more fluid and confident to improvise now. The art of utilisation is what makes live therapy so different from online or set scripts. You can almost see Mark’s brain whirring as he files this information ready to use later, weaving it smoothly into the conversation. And I didn’t know it was OK to take your client in and out of trance several times almost casually. To do this the therapist must have their finger right on the pulse, and this training shows how to do just that. It’s challenging and exciting.

I really like Mark’s amazingly humble manner and his style of explaining things in a very practical, usable way. I am an NLP practitioner and Life Coach, not a psychologist, but I need the extra variety of techniques to use with my clients and their presenting problems. I love the fact that I can see Mark help people so quickly and the clear way he explains what he is doing so it is easy for me to implement and tweak tools I am already using but understand better because of the extra teaching from Mark. I have gained a huge amount of learning during the short amount of time that I have signed up for Uncommon Practitioners TV.

I have recommended you to my fellow trainees in my Integrative Counselling foundation degree as I found your real life client work – along with the description of interventions – so useful. We don’t get to see this in our training – except for in triad work – so I’ve found it invaluable.

I am so pleased I have discovered Uncommon Knowledge. I am currently doing one of your hypnosis courses and I’ve very recently joined UPTV. It is great to have this resource to turn to when looking for inspiration for helping my own clients. It is also really heartening to witness how generous Mark is with his vast array of knowledge, experience and information. It’s also very refreshing to be signed up to something that is not continually trying to do the “hard sell”. Thank you for all your hard-work Mark, Roger and all the team it is very much appreciated. Thank you.

It is nice to have insights that I may not otherwise see or have used in the past. Once a person is in practice as a Psychotherapist, it is easy to fall into old habits and thinking so this ignites a different pattern of thinking that is helpful as I engage with my patients. Thank you. It is also confirming in many regards.

UPTV is excellent – it organizes knowledge by pattern. It means it stimulates me to recall my memory when a specific situation occurs during a session with my client. Moreover I can find real therapy sessions categorized by similar manner. The effectivity of this learning methodology is so brilliant, very useful and practical.

UPTV offers a unique insight for fledgling therapists. Like a fly on the wall, you are able to see various techniques in action as well as whole sessions so that you can see the introduction, middle and end. I highly recommend UPTV for anyone looking to gain confidence with their counselling skills.
